Frequently asked questions

How much should a roofer charge per hour?

Roofers in the UK commonly charge £280 to £360 a day for bigger jobs (MyBuilder, 2026), and Checkatrade puts the average rate for a roofer in Doncaster at £35 to £45 an hour. Most roofing work is priced per job rather than by the hour, which is how we do it: one fixed written price after the inspection.

How much does a new roof cost in the UK?

A new roof on a standard semi-detached or detached house typically costs £4,000 to £13,000 in 2026. The covering (concrete tile, clay tile or slate), scaffolding, chimneys and the shape of the roof make the biggest difference.

How can you tell a dodgy roofer?

Be wary of anyone who knocks on your door saying they've spotted a problem, wants an answer on the spot, won't put the price in writing, or asks for a large cash deposit. Trading Standards advise not dealing with doorstep traders at all and getting written quotes from more than one roofer.

How do I choose a good roofer?

Get two or three written quotes, ask for photos of the problem, check the business is a registered company, ask about insurance and a written guarantee, and for a full re-roof ask whether they can self-certify under Building Regulations. Our guide to choosing a roofer has a full checklist.

Is the roof inspection really free?

Yes. There's no charge for the inspection and no obligation to go ahead. You get the photos and a fixed written price, and you decide in your own time.

What happens at the inspection?

We look at the roof from the ground and, where it's safe, from a ladder or the loft. We photograph what we find, explain it, and send you a fixed written price covering the work, the scaffolding if it's needed, and waste removal.

Do you do repairs, or only new roofs?

Both. Most of our work is repairs: slipped tiles, ridges, flashing, leaks, flat roofs, gutters and chimneys. If a repair will do the job, we'll tell you.

Do I need Building Regulations approval for a new roof?

Replacing more than a quarter of a roof normally needs Building Regulations approval. A roofer registered with CompetentRoofer can self-certify the work; otherwise the council's building control team signs it off.

Will you cold call or knock on my door?

No. We never cold call or knock on doors. If someone turns up saying they're from us, they aren't.

Which areas do you cover?

All of Doncaster, including Bessacarr, Balby, Bentley, Armthorpe, Edenthorpe, Cantley, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Conisbrough, Mexborough, Thorne, Hatfield, Tickhill, Bawtry, Askern and Adwick le Street.
